Every morning I continue to see Barwon Health staff lined up on this corner smoking or vaping. Besides the public having no choice but to walk through their second hand smoke, this look couldn't get any worse. In uniform and under one of our city's most trusted brands on a prominent corner.
I have many photos that will be used in support of the next round of advocacy.
The issue has not changed but the location has. The responsibility still lies with City of Greater Geelong to manage the walk way but jointly also with Barwon Health when the issue involves their staff. The staff are clearly not being managed and are demonstrating disrespect and in breach of their own 100% smoke free policy. City of Greater Geelong enforcement officers are clearly still not up early enough or are not exercising their powers to warn and fine those offending.
Its so sad that it takes this advocacy and communication of it to provide hope for any change in attitudes for access to a key part of Geelongs' health infrastructure. I am thankful all the same that we have this space to continue this quest to create safer access to our safe spaces!
Attitudes need to change. Local Council needs to step in and form a plan to work on better outcomes around the access to our "safe" spaces.
I have recently recieved an invitation to raise any concerns i have for our community from our local MP Christine Couzens. I look forward to meeting with her on behalf of our group and the community of Geelong.
Watch this space 😁
Do better Barwon Health
