Hello everyone,

This will be our final update before we end this petition. As most of you likely already realize, Doug Ford has recently vowed to ban the use of speed cameras as a traffic calming measure. His reason for this ban is that these cameras are a “tax grab” which are less effective than signs and flashing lights.

In reality, speed cameras have repeatedly been shown to be more effective than signs and flashing lights. Not only this, but they free up police officers to focus on other important issues. And the revenue they generate goes into funding further traffic safety initiatives. Finally, taxes are something that all citizens are obligated to pay. By contrast speeding tickets are only issued to those drivers who fail to obey the laws of the road.

Ironically, Doug Ford’s solution involves allocating actual tax revenue to municipalities. The purpose being that of implementing alternative traffic calming measures, such as raised crosswalks, speed bumps, roundabouts and curb extensions. 

But these alternative measures cannot be implemented on roads that are emergency routes, such as Longwoods Road where Dante Caranci died this past Christmas season.

In light of these things, we have started a new petition, this time addressed to Doug Ford. If you are a citizen who is concerned about Doug Ford’s plan to ban speed cameras, please sign and share the following petition at change.org “Come stand in my area, Doug Ford”
