PETITION UPDATE: WE HAVE RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM PREMIER MARK BRANTLEY
We have now received a response from Hon. Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis, concerning our petition on the SSZ Act and the proposed Destiny Project.

The Premier stated:

“I am not familiar with you or your Petition, but assure you that the legislative processes for this or any other proposed SSZ project will be followed scrupulously.”
He further stated that the process includes sharing any Agreement with the general public, together with parliamentary oversight in both the Nevis Island Assembly and the National Parliament.

The Premier also said:

“I hope that you and your Petitioners will allow the process to work and to share your comments, if any, as and when the Agreement is released to the general public.”

SO WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

We welcome the Premier's assurance that the Agreement will be made available to the public and that parliamentary oversight will take place.

However, this makes the next stage particularly important.

The public must be given a genuine opportunity to examine the Agreement and supporting information BEFORE parliamentary consideration and before any irreversible commitments are made.

We will therefore continue to monitor the process closely and seek clarity on:

When will the Agreement be released?
What are the “fundamental project changes” recently announced by the Federal Government?
What recommendations have been made by the relevant oversight bodies?
What environmental, water, energy, infrastructure and socioeconomic assessments support the revised proposal?
What safeguards will protect the interests of the people of Nevis and the Federation?
The Premier has invited petitioners to comment when the Agreement is released.

We intend to take him up on that invitation.

Our petition is not a demand that development be stopped simply because it is controversial. It is a demand that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis have the information necessary to properly assess a project with potentially profound consequences for Nevis.
