Simister Village Community Association started this petition to Bury Council

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority is planning to develop 2,850 residential homes and 1.2 million sq. m of commercial space on the greenbelt land around the Northern Gateway and surrounding Simister area as part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework. Whilst Simister acknowledges the need for more housing, especially affordable housing. We are seriously concerned about the distribution and impact of proposed housing and commercial space in Simister. Simister is a unique and beautiful village and the proposed plans will do untold damage to the area and decimate the character of the village.

We, the undersigned, call on Bury Council to reconsider the scale of developments in Simister. The total loss of green belt for Greater Manchester is 4%, for Bury 12% but for Simister it is a massive 80%. Simister is also set to take a quarter of the commercial space for the whole of Greater Manchester.

We are also calling on the Government and their local representatives on the Council to be transparent about the housing growth figures they are applying to Bury Council and the consequences of not meeting their requirements.

If developers go ahead and build the proposed 2,850 homes and 1.2 million sq ft of commercial space it would cause traffic chaos, exacerbate the serious flooding issue, stretch sewerage systems to their limits and beyond, destroy much loved fields and ecological systems and blight Simister with urban sprawl and overcrowding.
