Rainbow Crossing installed this month – Help is Needed!

Kia ora aku hoa, We're excited to announce that Tauranga Moana’s Rainbow Crossing will be installed in mid-December, marking a major step for our community! This crossing is a symbol of diversity, equality, and inclusion.

To honour its meaning, it’s crucial to have a public opening to celebrate its message. A silent installation risks undermining its intent and inadvertently supporting harmful agendas.

Rainbow Youth and other advocacy groups, key beneficiaries of this project, should be involved in the event.

Please email Councilor Herb Schuler at Kevin.Schuler@tauranga.govt.nz to request a public acknowledgment of the installation. Let’s ensure the message of inclusion is heard loud and clear!

Thank you for your continued support in making this vision a reality.

"Kia ora Councillor Schuler

I understand that Tauranga City Council plans to soon install a new pedestrian crossing featuring Rainbow street art on Devonport Road, outside the current library.

As a strong supporter of the petition and campaign for this initiative, I believe it would be fitting to hold a public celebration and ‘opening’ of the crossing. Such an event would send a powerful message of inclusivity and mark a new era of acceptance in Tauranga Moana.

While I understand that some may raise concerns about potential divisiveness, I believe that forgoing a public acknowledgment of the crossing's intent would be a missed opportunity. In my view, a quiet or understated approach would not fully honour the significance of this initiative and could be seen as a missed chance to celebrate diversity.
