Dear #FreeTurkeyJournalists supporters, thank you so much for your help! We have achieved almost 2,000 signatures in two days. The whole IPI team is grateful for your help.
We also wanted to update you on the situation of the Cumhuriyet Journalists and our campaign:
Fourteen press freedom and free expression groups have joined an urgent request to Turkey’s president, prime minister, justice minister and foreign minister for a meeting to discuss the imprisonment of journalists Murat Sabuncu and Kadri Gürsel, and their colleagues at Cumhuriyet, as well as all other journalists jailed for exercising their right to freedom of expression.
The request emphasised the groups’ concerns over the lack of due process afforded to the Cumhuriyet journalists and fears that Turkey’s current state of emergency is being abused to indiscriminately target any and all who criticise the government.
IPI and its Turkey National Committee are following the meeting requests and will provide updates as to the officials’ response.
Today, IPI Executive Board Chair John Yearwood joined representatives of IPI’s Turkey National Committee in a visit to Cumhuriyet’s offices in Istanbul to show support for imprisoned journalists and their families.
