In very exciting news, the French have finally agreed to move forward with changing "oriental" to "ambrée"  but must include other descriptors like spice, resin, gourmand, etc to effectively communicate nuance and specificity (even though they have never specified unique cultures previously).

1. Press Release: Oriental Recommendation: La Société Internationale des Parfumeurs-Créateurs

2. Cinquième Sens Blog Post

While there seems to be some resistance among the top authorities, (read: white French male executives), we consider it a huge step towards acknowledging the need to use olfactive nomenclature that is inclusive, not harmful towards cultures, especially in light of recent hate crimes.

Here's an in-depth two part article by Clements Paradis for Nez if you need a primer on Orientalism & Perfumery.

Our resources have been updated here as well as on our Scent Festival Linktree - packed with articles, podcasts and TikToks. Please listen to Perfume Room Podcast, Ep 36, Decolonizing Scent with Yosh Han.

Thank you so much for your efforts and support. We'll be speaking about How to Implement Change at the World Perfumery Congress and also at Esxence Milan.
