Shropshire council has put to public consultation a document outlining proposed changes to car parking charges and timings which would affect almost all car parks that come under the remit of Shropshire council.
The changes involve charging at some car parks which are currently free, increasing charges at others, and changing the times when charging is in operation.
Shropshire council have said they hope to try and bring all towns charges into line where parking charges at all towns should give the same amount of parking time for the same cost. As some towns have far more to offer the shoppers than others this seems unfair. Small towns with a struggling retail business see this as the final nail in the coffin. Their shops are already struggling with high rents, poor facilities and a diminishing footfall; they now have to contend with the latest money making plans which could see their lively hoods disappear completely.
Currently the Market Drayton Swimming pool and skate park car park is free all day and workers were told to park there and walk into town to their retail jobs. The proposal now is to charge for that car park! Cheshire Street and Frogmore road would see increases No mention of Towers lawn has been made yet but it is assumed that will see a rise also. The situation is totally unfair and can only go to increasing the number of shops that will now close.
Other plans include scrapping the 15 mins "pop in" shopping where people can pick up a sandwich for lunch and not have to pay providing they are back within the 15 min window. Other proposals are to extend the chargeable hours to 8pm in the evening instead of the current 6pm. Sunday parking which is currently free could also become chargeable! This will have a big knock on effect to the likes of Festival Drayton centre who's events and shows often start before 8pm in the evening so visitors would have to pay for at least an hours parking maybe more. This is being viewed as a direct attack by Shropshire Council on Festival Drayton and coffee houses and restaurants who rely on evening trade.
The shop keepers and residents of Market Drayton ask you to show your support in refusing to accept these proposals in a very robust manner. Our town is already crumbling thanks to Shropshire Councils lack of concern for traders in our small towns. Please don't allow these proposals to go through. Please show your support now.
