Save Emily from Slaughter - insist farmer adheres to contract to sell lamb to animal lover

My wife, Alex is an animal lover and lifelong vegetarian. A few weeks ago she made an agreement with a local sheep farmer, to buy a lamb called Emily to save her from slaughter. Alex is 60 yrs old and it's been her childhood dream that one day she would save a lamb from slaughter and provide a sheep a long natural life. The farmer and my wife agreed the price of twice the slaughter rate and shook hands to seal the contract in public in Daresbury Village Hall. Now the sheep farmer refuses to honour the contract to sell her lamb to Alex, saying she breeds lambs to die.
My wife is heartbroken. This is a legally binding contract with witnesses. When they agreed the deal, the farmer told Alex the story of how she’d named one of her lambs Emily, because she was very pretty and born on the same day as her friend’s baby who was called Emily. My wife set her heart on saving little Emily from slaughter and spent weeks arranging for the lamb to live on a farm animal sanctuary with hundreds of other animal companions. Our neighbours are all very supportive even offering to fence off parts of their garden for Emily. This is very cruel to my wife as well as to Emily.
I'm hoping that when the sheep farmer- recognises the distress caused by breaching the contract and sees public support to save Emily, she will show compassion for Alex and honour the contract made to sell Emily to her, instead of the slaughter house. If this fails, Emily will be sold with the other lambs for slaughter in late Summer/ Autumn.
