900 Supporters!

I am again in awe at how many supports we are getting for this! You people are more than amazing, and I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart to adding your voice! Please keep it up and continue the growth! I hope that all of you have taken a few moments to go outside and look at that amazing moon we have had for the last couple of days. Last night was a Supermoon (scientific name: perigee syzygy). The moon orbits the Earth in an oval or elliptical shape, meaning sometimes the moon is closer to the Earth and other times it's farther away. When the moon is close, it called a perigee moon. The amount of moon that is illuminated by the sun as it orbits earth is called the moon phase. This phase changes because the moon orbits the Earth, which causes the portion of the moon we see illuminated to change. Supermoons are rare, because to exist, there must both be a full moon as well as a perigee moon. Last nights Supermoon was 25,973 Kilometers closer to Earth than the average of 384,472 Kilometers which causes it to look 7% larger and 15% brighter than normal. What is cool is that in the event that you missed the Supermoon this time around, you are going to get two more chances to see it in the near future as well as a few other spectacles! If you can make it out of the city and into the Dark Sky area, and if the sky is clear, you are in for treats that will make you more than appreciate what you are putting your name to in January. The next Supermoon is January 2, 2018 which is cool, but there is so much more. On January 3 and 4 is the Quadrantids Meteor Shower (known to produce 50-100 meteors and hour in a dark sky) and then on January 31, 2018 there is yet another Supermoon that is also a Blue Moon (meaning that there are two full moons in a month) and a total Lunar Eclipse. There is so many reasons to get out and see the Dark Sky you are protecting!
