Many survivors of child sexual abuse and their supporters, attended an Upper House session in Victorian Parliament yesterday morning. To show their support for the Wrongs Amendment (Vicarious Liability) Bill 2025 Rachel Payne has tabled as a private members bill in the Upper House. Which was being debated yesterday.
Quoting Rachel, "Through no fault of their own, victim survivors of institutional child abuse are being denied the justice they deserve – simply because their perpetrator was not technically an employee.
That's why we have introduced the Wrongs Amendment (Vicarious Liability) Bill 2025, to ensure that the law applies equally and retrospectively."
Rachel's bill seeks to ensure survivors of institutional abuse, who were abused by priests and volunteers, have the ability to seek justice. Through civil legal action in Victoria against the organisations which enabled priests and volunteers having unsupervised access to the children they abused.
To understand why this is so important, you can watch a video of David Ettershank MP speaking in the Upper House yesterday, link below.
