Time to make a PERMANENT change to Highway 37/suicide hill!
The Issue
Suicide Hill on Highway 37, between Kitimat and Terrace, has always been a very noticeable driving hazard. Winter 2016/17 there were 5 accidents in this particular area. 1 being fatal.
It is clear that "band-aid" fixes aren't our best option. These temporary patches do NOT change the fact that it isn't banked correctly. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to physically FEEL the constant slope changes, despite the recent resurfacing. I feel like money is being wasted going into temporary fixes, instead of a permanent solution.
Physically noticeable observations on suicide hill include, but are not limited to:
- Three major stress points, where potholes end up recurring EVERY year.
- Four different slope percentages; coming down it starts around 5% around the first corner, then drops to 6% at the first pothole, with pothole dipping dangerously towards the right. The second pothole is a slope of 7% with a pull to the left... then the slope drops to almost 8% after the third pothole, which causes major wheel-hop to the left. STILL very steep to the bottom corner, and just as you think you've passed the apex, the corner turns a harder right. This is a recipe for disaster, and as previously mentioned it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize this is a major hazard.
The speed limits were recently reduced from 80km to 60km going down. Clearly RoadSafe BC realizes this hill is a hazard. Instead of trying to fix the "symptoms" and adding a "band-aid" let's solve this problem by fixing the ROOT cause.
BANK SUICIDE HILL(Highway37ServiceArea26Skeena) PROPERLY!
