Tougher Sentencing for Animal Abusers

The Issue

A case of animal cruelty is reported every 19 seconds in the U.K. This leads to 3.2 million animals being rescued from abuse and mistreatment every year.

Right now, the sentencing for animal abuse is 6 months in prison, and unlimited fine and a ban on owning animal for 5 years. We want this changed to at least 5 years in prison, an unlimited fine and a lifetime ban on owning or working with animals. The pain and suffering that they give the animal is unacceptable, and this kind of behaviour needs appropriate consequences.

With the current sentences, an individual who sells fake DVDs can get a longer prison sentence than someone who mistreats an animal. This needs to change.
