India has a massive issue with covid-19 unprecedented in comparison to other countries due to a huge population and huge under reporting.

Experts and many of my contacts in India suggest deaths could be many times more in certain states and considerably more than being reported in other states. In addition India lacks the infrastructure to manufacture Oxygen generators at volume and hence tends to import this equipment due to low import duties.

COVID-19 pandemic-hit India is going through an acute shortage of oxygen. Efforts are on to import oxygen concentrators to meet demand and save lives. But a stark reality is that the country lacks enough manufacturers of this critical medical equipment and is now dependent on imports, sources told BusinessToday.In.

Low import duty of 10% made local manufacturing unviable for domestic manufacturers, resulting in a free flow of imports of concentrators, particularly from China. As an emergency measure, Centre removed this duty  to allow un-interrupted imports until the situation improves.
