NOAA HURRICANE HUNTER'S RELOCATION

In February of this year, it was announced that the NOAA Hurricane Hunters were being forced out of their hangar at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. The hunters are famous for flying into and getting critical data from tropical disturbances and cyclones in the Atlantic basin.
In April, Senator Bill Nelson announced on Twitter, according to theledger.com, that the Hurricane Hunters would be staying within 50 miles of MacDill. Presumably, this was done out of some sort of nod to Tampa’s civic pride or wanting to not move jobs out of the area.
Unfortunately that puts us in Brevard County out of the running. MacDill is about 150 miles or so west of Patrick Air Force Base.
But I’d like to start a petition to the powers that be to reconsider their current location plans and to instead consider Brevard County’s Patrick Air Force Base (PAFB) as the new home of the Hurricane Hunters.
Patrick Air Force Base (on the Space Coast) is ideally located to investigate any storms in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico or the Pacific Ocean.
Additionally, at PAFB, the hunters would be able to work with or under the 45th Weather Squadron, which already does a tremendous job of forecasting with respect to our space program.
Still feeling the loss both financially and emotionally from the Space Shuttle Program bringing this great unit to the Space Coast would go a long way in fixing this void. Moreover, it would give us regional, even national headlines that are positive and that can only help our economy even further.
