If you haven’t seen this statement from Joe Minutolo and Friends, please take a minute to read it now. “On June 12, Bar Harbor residents will be asked if they want the Town to purchase the former ferry terminal property at 121 Eden Street. A YES vote means we retain local control. If the Town doesn’t buy the land, it could fall into outside developers’ hands forever. Bar Harbor has ONE CHANCE to secure this land for future generations. The opportunity to create a marina and public access to the water furthers our goal of strengthening our historic and cultural fabric. It connects us to our maritime heritage. It allows Maine to be Maine. This is a tremendous opportunity for our Town: • The purchase price of $3.5 million is an EXTRAORDINARY BARGAIN. The current owner, the State of Maine, values the property at almost double the amount. • The property can GENERATE REVENUE for Bar Harbor. • ADDITIONAL FUNDING SOURCES—including cruise ship fees, state and federal grants, parking revenue, and private philanthropy—are all possible ways of further reducing the costs to the Town of purchasing and developing this property. • Town ownership means LOCAL CONTROL. • A multi-use marina would provide much-needed PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE WATER. • This may well be our LAST CHANCE to increase water access for our community. • The Ferry Terminal Property Advisory Committee RECOMMENDS PURCHASING the property for $3.5 million to provide additional parking, reduce downtown congestion, and develop a multi-use marina. • This purchase is resoundingly and UNANIMOUSLY SUPPORTED by both our Town Council and by the Warrant Committee. Please vote YES on ELECTION DAY, June 12, on this historic opportunity. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.”
