We support Article13, the Citizen’s Initiative, a Bar Harbor Land Use Ordinance
Amendment that:
✓ Allows smaller cruise ships to continue to dock,
✓ Allows any size cruise ship to continue to anchor,
✓ Protects current passenger caps, revenues, and businesses, and
✓ Gives the voters of Bar Harbor control over future change !
We support Article 13 because :
1) Every citizen deserves the right to a vote in deciding how the town of Bar Harbor
develops.
2) Article 13 gives voters the only opportunity, through a vote on zoning, to have any legal control over cruise ship visits. If only Article 12 is approved, it would allow development of a massive cruise ship port and pier at the ferry terminal site, in advance and sight unseen, of whatever plan may be developed in the future .
3) Citizens deserve a community wide planning process, not a committee driven process where only a few decide what our Town, our Island, and our National Park becomes.
We the Residents of Bar Harbor want our Town to own the ferry terminal, but we reject the Maine Department of Transportation’s heavy-handed attempt to influence our vote or to punish us if citizens vote to approve Article 13. The Department should not attempt to interfere with our legal right to determine what our town becomes.
We the Residents of Frenchman Bay and Mount Desert Island want our concerns heard before our Bay, our Island and, for many of us, our way of life are changed forever.
We the Citizens of the United States, from all parts of our country, also want our concerns to be heard before the character of our National Park is changed forever. We believe that an open and inclusive process, real democracy, is needed to protect the unique, irreplaceable beauty of our town, our island and our national park.
Please Vote YES on Article 13!
