Dear Supporters:

Dropping this quick note to inform you of the latest developments concerning Brittney Griner's detention in Russia.

On Tuesday, I did a whopping nine (9) interviews with CBC Radio stations all across Canada. I was asked in many of them what specific next steps must be taken toward securing her safe return to the U.S.

BG had been denied consular access throughout her detention, so that was my answer: getting officials from the U.S. embassy in Moscow access to her.

Less than 24 hours later, my contact at CBC Radio in Toronto -- who had so expertly coordinated yesterday's interviews to bring BG's story to the Canadian audience -- informed me that the Canadian news wire had spit out an update: The U.S. embassy in Moscow has finally been granted access to Brittney Griner.

I tweeted about it here as breaking news.

At this point, we don't know what more this means other than the ability for U.S. officials to assess her condition and gather first-hand information about her well-being. We already know BG has been ordered to remain in pretrial detention until May 19. But hopefully the presence of U.S. officials will ensure that her rights are protected until a strategy can be developed to secure her release.

It should be noted that the 2022 WNBA season begins on May 6.
