End The Current Vaquita Rescue Effort
Locate Nets Not Vaquita! Locate Poachers Not Vaquita!
November 4 2017: The very sad news that Vaquita rescuers have killed the vaquita that they “rescued” demonstrates that the current approach needs to be abandoned immediately in favor of a new plan.

Vaquita tend to be shy and elusive, avoiding boats when approached. The mission has employed a numbers boats of varying sizes and special nets manufactured specifically for capturing the Vaquita who have demonstrated, according to rescuers' observations, an awareness of how to avoid the nets, thus this approach has tricked them, creating an extremely stressful situation.
Prior to capturing this female, the rescue team captured a calf that exhibited such stress it was determined the best option was release back to the general area where it was first seen swimming with members of its family. No determination was made as to whether the calf survived the trauma of capture, sampling and release or if it was able to rejoin the others. It is quite possible that the calf died.
We know from years of observation in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan that dolphins frequently die from when they are chased and captured. We also know that abandoned calves die with great regularity.
Please use all of these scientific resources to keep the vaquitas out of the nets, locate and remove nets and stop the poaching. Build an ecotourism destination that is centered around free animals before it is too late.
You have killed this female vaquita. One of the last in the world. Please stop and shift to a new plan now before it is too late.
