Dear Seattle University,
Your decision to ask Jodi Kelly to step down as Dean of Matteo Ricci College is offensive. Matteo Ricci was a servant of God who traveled the world, working to bridge beliefs and peoples. Dean Kelly has acted in accordance with Matteo Ricci's tradition.
I have no issue with students challenging MRC curriculum--MRC has a long tradition of encouraging students to strive for social justice and academic excellence. However, the bullying tactics of students in asking for Jodi Kelly's resignation fly in the face of everything taught in MRC and at Seattle U. Bullying is not a tactic taught in Jesuit education. Yet, these students have circumvented all reasonable means of achieving their goals, and have actively worked to tarnish the reputation of a professional who has championed students of all backgrounds along with a meaningful and integrative curriculum for decades. Seattle University, in acquiescing to their demands, has dismissed the needs of the majority of MRC students, along with the experiences of former students and colleagues.
I respectfully ask for you to not give in to this type of bullying and to stand by Jodi Kelly and her long tenure as a person of integrity, faith, and action.
Sincerely,
