The Christine Holgate-Australia Post-Cartier watches scandal is one of the biggest, most dishonest beat-ups in recent Australian political history. Far from misusing "taxpayers' money", Christine Holgate had transformed Australia Post to make it profitable so it could sustain the important services it provides to the Australian people. She awarded the watches to executives who worked very hard for months to negotiate a deal that made three of the Big Four banks pay properly for post offices serving their customers. Christine Holgate ensured this deal included making cash available at post offices. This proved invaluable in the 2020 bushfires, when retailers and petrol stations in places like Cobargo would only take cash and the local post office was the only place cash was available. Her vision of Australia Post providing expanded financial services demonstrated to many that Australia Post would make an excellent public postal bank in its own right, which could, among many other benefits, maintain the cash payments system that the private banks are trying to get rid of. There's now an inquiry into the removal of Christine Holgate; please support this new petition to put maximum pressure on the PM to reinstate her as CEO.
