On Saturday, I was so proud to hear Kopi and Tharni sing a new song for us, as we came together on Zoom to celebrate our friendship with our beautiful Biloela family. If you missed it, you can watch the livestream on YouTube.
Laraine was born in Biloela and has lived here all her life. She told us how she first met Priya and Nades through neighbours and mutual friends.
“It breaks my heart that this family is being denied to come home to Biloela where they will feel love, and be loved, by so many people who have big hearts,” she said.
Family friend Marie Austin said that her friendship with Priya and Nades only strengthened since they were taken from their Biloela home.
“During their detention in Melbourne, my husband had a serious accident that left him with a broken neck,” Marie said.
“Once Priya and Nades heard of this, they were on the phone to me. For all that they were going through, they still had the capacity to care about me and what was happening in my life.”
Margot, Kopi and Tharni’s “Aussie Grandma”, told us how she held Tharni as a baby in Biloela.
“I couldn’t put her down. And I guess that was just fate telling me that me and Tharni are going to have this connection forever, for life,” Margot said.
“My life in Biloela was very happy and peaceful. My family and I had settled into a safe life there and we were surrounded by a beautiful community,” Priya told the meeting.
“When I think about all the love from my community and around Australia it gives me strength and helps me stop the tears.”
Over the last four years, your actions have persuaded politicians of all beliefs and backgrounds to speak up for our Biloela family. Your actions got this family off Christmas Island and convinced Anthony Albanese and Kristina Keneally to commit to bringing them home to Biloela.
But no-one can predict who will win an election - and our power to hold our elected representatives accountable is greatest just before an election, not afterwards. To keep Priya and her family safe, we must apply pressure to government MPs and Senators to bring them #HometoBilo now, before the election.
For everything you are doing to bring Priya, Nades, Kopika and Tharnicaa safely home to Biloela - thank you.
With hope,
Angela
