Friends, when Priya and Nades' lawyer, Carina, arrived on Christmas Island, they welcomed her with a cake Nades made in the little kitchen inside the “Construction Camp” detention centre.
This is why I love this family. After enduring almost two years of cruel and pointless imprisonment, (including six months on Christmas Island) at the hands of our politicians, they still care so much about making a guest feel welcome.
Under Australian law, Minister Tudge and Minister Dutton have the power to bring them home to Biloela with the stroke of a pen. Our politicians use this power around 1,000 times a year.
But right now, they are forcing this beautiful family to fight their unfair system in the courts.
Next Friday, our family’s wonderful legal team will appear in the Federal Court on behalf of youngest daughter, Tharunicaa.
Incredibly, they will need to show why immigration officials should assess this little Australian-born toddler’s right to the protection of the country she was born in. I know - it's crazy!
Every last dollar of this beautiful family’s legal costs has been chipped in by ordinary people around Australia.
But even if the court finds in her favour, with Mr Dutton and his taxpayer-funded lawyers fighting two-year Tharunicaa every step of the way, there could still be a long legal road ahead.
