Tamara Finucan started this petition to SBCSD School Board

As parents and a community as a whole, our number one goal is to protect our children and keep them as safe as possible. Unfortunately, we no longer live in a society where we can say "that could never happen in our small community" when a tragic event happens and parents are left to worry about how safe their kids really are while they are at school. We need more security measures in place to protect our children and the staff.

As details of a recent threat to our school have been released, our worst fears have peaked to an all time high. With rumors still spreading through out the week, our community and schools need to come together to create a plan to make our staff and our children feel safer in their learning environment.

I created this petition to collect the support of parents, staff and community members to ensure we provide every possible solution to make our schools as safe as possible. Our district has fallen behind the times with the lack of security measures that are needed in the world we now live in.

I am asking you to sign and share  to support a huge, but very necessary, project of placing metal detectors at all SBCSD schools. We are lucky that the incident that took place over the weekend was reported and was handled before anything serious could happen. We have access to the technology, so why wait for something to happen before we implement it?

School districts surrounding us have installed them and it should be a priority to our school board also. Not only can the detectors catch weapons including knives, box cutters and guns but just having them part of school protocol could be enough to deter someone thinking about intending to do  harm to others. If confiscating just one weapon before something bad happens, most community members would believe that the investment is worth it.

Our goal should always be to provide a safe learning environment for our children. While I believe the district has handled this situation with our childrens' safety as the top priority, I believe that we can do better. I know we can do better. I know that having metal detectors will only improve our districts safety protocol and will help ease the minds of parents, staff, community members and, most importantly,  the students.
