Opposition to Proposed Official Community Plan Amendment – File 7503.06
Dear Mayor and Council,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Official Community Plan amendment (File 7503.06) concerning 1001, 1005, and 1010 Legacy Way in Whistler, BC. Specifically, I oppose the proposed rezoning of existing parkland on Legacy Way for potential residential development.
As a resident of the beautiful community of Cheakamus Crossing, I deeply value the parklands that define the character of our neighbourhood. These green spaces are far more than open areas—they are essential gathering places that foster community connection, recreation, and healthy living for residents of all ages.
Our growing, family-oriented community relies heavily on these parklands and recreational amenities, including the tennis and basketball courts that are proposed to be converted from parkland to housing. These facilities are not simply places for casual recreation; they are important community assets that support local programs, encourage physical activity, and provide safe spaces for children, youth, and families to connect.
Converting these lands to residential development would significantly reduce the recreational opportunities that our community depends on. In a neighbourhood characterized by increasing density, it is essential that recreational infrastructure and green space be protected and prioritized alongside the need for housing.
I recognize the importance of addressing housing needs in Whistler. However, this should not come at the expense of vital public parkland and community amenities. Once these green spaces are lost, they cannot easily be replaced.
I respectfully urge Council to reject the proposed amendment and preserve these valued parklands for the benefit of current and future residents. Protecting these spaces is essential to maintaining the balance between thoughtful development and the quality of life that makes Cheakamus Crossing such a vibrant and welcoming community.
