Exciting news from the International Seabed Authority this summer with the election of a new Secretary General (SG), Leticia Carvahlo. Ms. Carvahlo will begin her term in January 2025. This is a positive development in the fight to stop deep-sea mining as it means the ISA will no longer be in the stranglehold of the outgoing SG who has demonstrated time and again his bias towards the deep-sea mining industry.
However, while we celebrate Ms. Carvalho’s appointment and her commitment to bringing transparency and reform to the ISA, it is concerning that she has also expressed her intention to finalize the mining code in 2025, a requisite (although not a legal requirement) for ocean mining to begin. Given the science, and everything we know and the fact that there is so much we don’t know about the deep-sea, Ms. Carvalho's stance is troubling and underscores the urgent need for more of us to speak out against this reckless industry. The only reasonable option is to secure a moratorium on deep-sea mining.
With this news we have decided to reset The Ocean Hope Expedition and focus on fundraising to deliver an epic high-impact expedition, and more wins for the deep-sea!
The stakes are high. We cannot afford to slow down the wave of resistance against deep-sea mining!
