Happy Easter to those who celebrate!

In 1996 I came eye to eye with a Humpback whale. I felt truly seen for the first time. Its huge beautiful eyes penetrated my soul. That day reinforced my commitment to work for the ocean, home to whales and other amazing ocean beings worthy of protection.

My mission today is to protect the High Seas, half the planet, from the emerging threat of deep-sea mining. The deep sea is home to countless animals and nourishes the ocean allowing whales and all marine beings to thrive. Our own survival too depends on a healthy ocean. The ocean regulates our climate, provides us with food and jobs. Every second breath we take comes from the ocean.

Latest Update: The International Seabed Authority concluded its Council meeting this week in Jamaica. Whilst some countries are trying to rush through a mining code that would allow deep-sea mining to begin, other countries pushed back and defended the need for transparency and a thorough process. This resistance from champion countries has saved us for now. But we must ensure a majority support for a moratorium on deep-sea mining before it is too late.
