Construction on a proposed 50-megawatt Bitcoin mining data center in Somerville, Alabama, is moving forward despite local moratoriums because Morgan County has no zoning laws to legally stop it.
Despite strong local pushback, utility markers and lines for water, gas, and telecommunications have been placed along Union Road after the company shifted from private easements to public or alternative routes.
The Morgan County Commission passed a 12-month moratorium in June 2026, and the Somerville Town Council passed an 18-month moratorium.
County officials acknowledged the moratoriums carry no legal enforcement power because the site sits outside town limits and the county lacks general zoning regulations.
Local residents—organized through groups like Say No to Data Centers Morgan County—have gathered hundreds of petition signatures, rejected cash/internet incentives from the developer,
and are raising funds for legal and environmental challenges.
