March 6/19 Update
The Fishing Industry and First Nation group calling themselves the “Pacific Balance Pinniped Society (PBPS)” want to first slaughter 50,000 seals and sea lions so they can continue to profit from a dying industry. The greatest threat to mending the broken Ocean Food Chain is the worldwide human seafood market! Moratoriums are needed now or it will be lost forever!
The PBPS is now urging people to call DFO claiming safety issues and net damage. They want DFO to shoot the hungry pinnipeds that obviously are going to be attracted to the netted fish! Today DFO reported no significant bird or sea lion activity in some areas and greatly reduced in others. Seal bombs and bear bangers are used to scare them away. They also use a “bait boat” to attract them so other boats can fish!
They are fear mongering using the pinnipeds as the scapegoats. They show photos of nets full of pinnipeds but they have pulled in the nets making it look more crowded. As shown in the photo when nets are set pinnipeds will come and go over the nets. Also, they claim that a little girl was attacked and pulled into the water BUT people were feeding the sea lions, and they report fishermen getting bitten when humans invade their homes and other types of non animal related industry accidents.
If it is truly unsafe to attract pinnipeds to the nets then stop putting themselves at any risks by Pulling Up the Nets! Enact a Moratorium Now!
Respect Wildlife Rights and Homes
This threatened Georgia Strait Herring Spawn is a Wonder of Nature that brings together wildlife such as heron, eagles, otters, bears, porpoises, dolphins, whales and others to peacefully share the fish for their survival. Kilometers of near shore waters turn to a chalky white when the herring lay their eggs.
People Have Food Choices - Wildlife Do Not!
The Fishing Industry is once again going into the homes of wildlife with threats to kill them for just being who they are – wildlife. Wildlife will obviously be attracted to the fishing nets as in the similar case of fish farms. Targeting pinnipeds Will Not “Save the Salmon and Orcas” that is part of the propaganda by the Fishing Industries! Are they going to shoot all the wildlife? The Human Predators have decimated the herring, the salmon and the Ocean Food Chain.
Truly a Dying Fishery!
Using wild fish for nonhuman consumption is illegal under the Canadian Fisheries Act so why is 90% of the herring going to fish farms and pet food? Due to the lower Japanese roe market prices to fishermen have dropped from a high of about $5,000 per tonne to only several hundred dollars. Not worth it for the time, operating costs and a massive pinniped slaughter.
Save this rare Wonder of Nature’s Herring Spawn for Eco Tourism! Businesses Must Adapt and Try to Live in Harmony! Sea lions and birds gatherings have even helped the fishing industry locate the herring! We All Must Protect Super Natural BC!
