The huge spike in immigration the ALP government has presided over is bringing Australia's break-neck population growth to the fore in public conversation.

Sustainable Population Australia is taking a leading role with its "Say NO to a Big Australia" campaign. The federal Liberal Party is emulating it with their own 'Say no to Labor's Big Australia' slogans ('beware of Greeks bearing gifts' - they started it all back in 2005).

SPA has a Position Statement you can sign. Their strategy is to: "get enough signatures on our Position Statement to demonstrate the anger the Australian people are feeling about the unmandated Big Australia/mass immigration population agenda being imposed on our country."

"We then use force of numbers to gain media opportunities for our representatives, and to influence politicians."

"Our big goal is to make this THE election issue and force a policy shift towards population stabilisation below 30 million. This will give us the time we need to catch up on housing and general infrastructure while undertaking the necessary economic and ecological studies needed to reassess our goals and priorities."

Why is SPA not calling for a plebiscite? Because we, the people, cannot force one on the government by petition. This is a constitutional flaw. Also, if the government introduces a bill and holds a plebiscite and doesn't get the result it wants, it can ignore it! Another constitutional flaw.

20 years of an unmandated policy by governments of all persuasions that has transformed the country dramatically against the will of the majority means something is systemically wrong with our political system. It has become captured by vested interests.  It has become disconnected from the people and is no longer properly representing us.

Constitutional reform is required. We need a referendum on plebiscites. And a referendum on the electoral system to make it a more proportional representation of the electorate's will, as most countries in Europe have as well as New Zealand.
