One step forward two steps back

After a year of campaigning, the municipality of Dysart is putting in a much needed site alteration bylaw. The details aren't as pretty as the headline (the bylaw allows exemptions but without identifying the process or criteria; it relies on experts to identify areas, but does not define the qualifications of these knowledge-holders; and more). In any case, it is a step in the right direction! 

Alas, this small success comes on the back of recent actions by the Premier of Ontario to jeopardize wetlands and wildlife across this province Ontario. Hard-fought legislation from the 1940's are being removed in favour of development and choice developers, that are given approvals at the discretion of the Premier's office.

Grace taught us the value of these sacred spaces and showed us what is at stake. The argument that wetlands and critical habitats should be compromised for economic development and housing, does not make common sense in this day and age. Certainly we are collectively smarter than this; more innovative; more patient and compassionate. Certainly by now, we have learned to look to the future, to honour our descendants to come, and to walk more kindly and carefully on this earth. 

Therefore, we will redirect this petition to reach the province, in order to speak to a "growing cancer" of over-consumption.
