How would you describe your fencing coach(es)?
Our coaches are like extensions of our family. They do so much more than just prepare our littles for competition. They teach them to be independent, thoughtful, creative, tenacious young men and women. They encourage them to take care of their bodies by eating healthy, resting and stretching. They teach them the value of taking pride in their space and belongings (organizing their fencing gear, keeping the club clean and neat). And they encourage age-appropriate autonomy so they can learn and grow at their own pace. Basically, a great coach is like having an extra parent around. And we could all use about a dozen of those!! ❣️
That's why we're fighting to keep Youth National Competitive Fencing alive and thriving. Our Y10 & Y12 fencers make up 30% of USA Fencing's total membership. Our coaches rely on these kids for their livelihood and the sport of fencing relies on these kids for its future. Great fencers (and humans) aren't made in a day. It takes time. . . and a lot of patience from some very special mentors. Telling kids they have to wait until Y14 to compete nationally will gut our youth fencing programs - and many of their clubs.
So, I'm asking each of you to do a little homework today.
- Call, text, or email your Coaches, Club Owners & Mentors. Thank them for all that they do for your family.
- Ask your Coaches and Club Owners to sign the petition from Coaches, Club Owners & Olympians to the Board of Directors of USA Fencing. Here is the link:
En Garde! A Letter from Coaches, Club Owners & Olympians
3. Remember to sign up for an Access Membership ($25) at USAFencing.org so you can vote for your kids!
4. Share share share on social media!
Again, thank you for all that you do. We are closing in on 2,000 signatures in just a few weeks and that is a BIG DEAL.
All my best,
Christina
