Background:

Sharavathi, taking birth at Ambuteertha (Teerthahalli), and flowing merely for 128km, has been dam(m)-(n)-ed and pillaged repeatedly since 1960s for hydro power generation. This small river hosts Hirebhaskara dam, Linganamakki Dam, and Gerusoppa Dam, providing reservoir support for Mahatma Gandhi Hydroelectric Station (139.2MW), Sharavathi Generation Station (1035MW), Gerusoppa Dam Power House (240MW), Linganamakki Dam Power House (55MW), and Ambuthirtha Power Plant (22MW). 

The latest proposal being added to the burgeoning list is the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project (PSP). At 2000MW, it will be India's largest pumped storage project. But, it is asking for 287 acres of Lion-Tailed Macaque (LTM)'s home, evergreen forest within the Sharavathi LTM Wildlife Sanctuary, their only home in the world. Its is proposed to be fragmented with the project's integral components of roads, bridges, transmission lines, quarries, tunnels, and powerhouses. A project that undermines legal due process as an accomplished fact, a practice explicitly barred by the Supreme Court of India.
