Hi all!
A quick recap: Prospect Group, the Burbank-based developer that bought Walker’s Cafe in 2022, wants to build an almost 4,000 ft, two-story house + ADU right behind the cafe. It would completely box in the tiny cafe, leaving it without enough room to function and making it unviable. Since first unveiling these plans 3+ years ago, the developer has been unwilling to compromise on the size of the house, and interested cafe tenants were stonewalled. We’re worried the cafe is not being prioritized.
The City Planning appeal hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday June 2, 4:30 pm.
Here's what we're asking for:
1) A smaller house that allows the owner to profit but gives the cafe the space it needs.
2) A special planning condition (called a "Q condition") that the historic cafe must remain operational.
3) No building permits for the house until real progress on the cafe.
We need you to join the email campaign in support of these important protections.
Use your own words, but please include the asks above. Here's who to send it to:
apcharbor@lacity.org, monica.taimoori@lacity.org, councilmember.mcosker@lacity.org,
Cecilia.Lamas@lacity.org
In the subject line, please include Walker’s Cafe – ZA-2023-7218-ZV-CDP-MEL-HCA-1A.
Thank you for your support. This is a crucial time. Show up--speak up! And if you're free tomorrow, come give public comment, in-person in Wilmington or on Zoom. Find the meeting details here.
