THE GLOVES ARE OFF
Aug 26, 2018 —
Dear all of you 3,392 Supporters, not to mention all of our very welcome future new Supporters! Our numbers are currently increasing at a most encouraging rate; thank you all very much for sticking with this lengthy Campaign.
The summer is over, days are getting shorter, it is raining again in the UK…and we are now definitely facing crunch time in terms of our battle to
SAVE VICTORIA TOWER GARDENS.
Many of you will possibly have seen by now the EIA Scoping Report (http://idoxpa.westminster.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=PCQ5CIRP2IN00 – please click on last item at the bottom of the list to download), that sets out the long list of issues that the proponents of the Memorial and Learning Centre will be looking at in greater detail as part of their Planning Application. While this document is quite technical and very lengthy, if you do read it carefully, it does give us useful snippets of information about the other side’s thinking, timing, and hurdles that they will need to overcome in order to convince the world (and the Planners) that they should be allowed to proceed with their ill-advised scheme.
So we now know that the assumed construction period is likely to be 36 months, starting in late 2019, that their excavations will go ± to a depth of 8 metres, and that they are possibly looking to increase their footprint. There is also new talk about needing a ‘security gatehouse’ at the Southernmost point, and that the playground, toilets and kiosk might be ‘temporarily’ (or permanently???) shut during the construction period…
Though useful, this document is however just a preamble and leaves us guessing.
Next week however we will all finally have the opportunity to take stock of the real thing, the latest iteration of the drawings, as they will be submitted by the architects in the near future as a Planning Application. They will be on display as part of an advertised ‘Important Local Consultation’, open to the public at
Church House Conference Centre, Great Smith Street SW1P 3NZ
on the following dates:
Tuesday 4 September 5-7pm
Wednesday 5 September -Friday 7 September 12-7pm
Saturday 8 September 10-4pm
If you cannot make these dates, you can get in touch with the UKHMF’s official Communication Advisors, Four Communications, on 0203 697 4325 to try and reschedule.
Over and above these times for the general public, there will be a few other viewings. One in particular is reserved for Councillors, MPs, journalists etc.; for this one we are proposing handing out leaflets stating our opposition to the scheme as people troop in; we think it is very important that we should state our position with any viewers who might be able to exert any influence. This viewing will be held on:
Tuesday 4 September between 12 and 2pm
Please do join us if you have time and are in the area, it would be great to have a decent number of us standing at the door, handing out leaflets and explaining our arguments.
The Save Victoria Tower Gardens Campaign has also been officially invited to a private viewing on 3 September. I will be subsequently reporting back to you via another Update to this petition my initial comments on the drawings. We are expecting that at the viewing we will all be asked to 'feedback'. All too often at these sorts of events the questions are asked in such a way as to only deliver answers that help the cause of those who ask them. We will hopefully have advice for you on how not to fall into this trap!!!!
Many of our wonderful supporters have been very busy over the summer. We now have a website, and a Twitter and Facebook account. These can be seen using the following links:
Finally: If you have any specific media expertise, if you are a journalist, a planning professional, an experienced campaigner, or have any other specific skills that might be of use, we would love to hear from you. Generally, if you have free time and would like to become more involved, we expect that we will have a need for more volunteers over the next few months.
Once again, many many thanks for your support, it is much appreciated!
