Dear Friends,

(image: map shows the Bransty Tunnel in pink from Whitehaven to Corkickle (nr St Bees)

I have been pressing the authorities on the danger of continued use of the 1km long (under Whitehaven) Bransty Tunnel to railroad nuclear waste flasks to Sellafield from the North while there are investigations going on by Network Rail into the impacts on the Tunnel of the continued gush of heavily polluted minewater.   The reactivation of old minewater may (or may not - no-one is saying) have been caused by our friend the CEO of West Cumbria Mining in his exploratory boreholes and hydrological investigations (flushing lots of water down boreholes)  for his new coal mine.  You may remember that this is the guy that is advising Government on investigation techniques, costings, construction etc of the "Geological Disposal Facility" for hot nuclear wastes (the prime target for GDF is next to his coal mine!)

The correspondence is here- but it all points to the fact that nuclear is far from "clean" and we must do all we to reclaim the word "clean" from the toxic nuclear industry.
