Dear Friends

Dear Friends

There is some good news in that we have heard on the grapevine that Nuclear Waste Services will not be carrying out seismic blasting in the Allerdale (Cumbria) or Lincolnshire areas where they are looking to put a deep nuclear dump.  I am sure that our campaign has played a part in this decision.   The not so good news is that they would go straight to explorative borehole testing (which they planned to do following the seismic blasting).  Many people may not remember the predecessor to Nuclear Waste Services was the 'arms length' government body called NIREX.  In the late 1990s a public inquiry stopped NIREX from carrying out explorative borehole work in West Cumbria for the dumping of intermediate level radioactive wastes underground near Sellafield.   This time around the plan would involve investigate deep boreholes into the seabed off the Lake District Coast for nuclear wastes that would include very hot high level wastes.   We said NO in the 1990s - we say NO now!!

I have just done a painting to try and illustrate the reality behind the fizzing hype of "Great British Nuclear".

best wishes

Marianne
