Greetings fellow artists, creative business owners, and supporters.
It seemed for months, and weeks, and down to the the very last hours of August, on the last possible that the sale could go through, that it would fall through. But alas, they settled. The next day the remaining tenants received aggressive letters with notice to vacate in 30 days. Some of us have been in the building for many years, and some of us don't have a next move in place yet.
The water to the building was shut off, although the previous and new owners both deny having caused the shut-off. We are told the new owners are working to get it back on (after 5 days of no water in a tenant occupied building over a holiday weekend).
We are working with some local activists and politicians from a few different angles, including the demands of 90 days from notice to vacate, as well as other proposals as how future similar sales should be approached and handled.
It really is a shame, to say the absolute least, that the previous owners were not interested in sharing ownership/ selling over time, to the current tenants as an artist-co-op. We could have had a really beautiful thing. It would have been a lot of work, of course, we admit.
Your support means a lot to us. If you have any ideas, contacts, available studio space, desire to purchase art, or extra funds you'd like to donate to the artists impacted by this jarring and disheartening sale, feel free to get in touch via jenbrownart@gmail.com
