There’s been a flurry of activity recently and we’d really like your help; London mayoral candidate Diane Abbott has put forward an Early Day Motion to the House of Commons to debate the dubious merits of the Garden Bridge.
But she needs more MPs to back her up or it won’t stand a chance of being discussed so please contact your MP to get them to support this motion as it affects everyone. Here’s how to write to your MP: https://www.writetothem.com/ Just send them a simple message like this: “Dear [MP name] Please support this EDM http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2015-16/240 to challenge the public funding allocated for the private Garden Bridge. This is a totally unnecessary tourist trap given we are supposed to be in 'times of austerity' right now. We need your help to question the misuse of public funds for this vanity project that won’t even be a public right of way.”
In the meantime, artist Will Jennings has devised an inspirational competition called A Folly For London http://www.afollyforlondon.co.uk/. It's an 'open-to-all, free-to-enter competition for the architecture of the absurd' Sound familiar? 'In celebration of great British satire, this competition is an opportunity to propose an alternative but equally ridiculous project for the public space being lost to the proposed Garden Bridge on London’s South Bank'
We look forward to seeing the results!
And last but by no means least, join the Garden Bridge Liar's Tour on 25th July at 2pm. Chris Roberts from London Street Tours will walk you through a flight of fancy that will feature top London tales of the Thames and South Bank as well as the opportunity to win lovely prizes and potentially perform some silly forfeits. Happy walking!
