Good morning everyone! You may or may not be aware that the EPA and Canadian Company Northern Dynasty Metals settled a lawsuit filed by Northern Dynasty Metals who proposed the Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay. The agreement in principal, would shelve EPA protections for Bristol Bay in lieu of Northern Dynasty Metals dropping their lawsuit against the EPA. If anyone needs evidence of why the Pebble Mine is a bad idea, look no further than the Mt. Polly Mine disaster in British Columbia, Canada in 2014. On August 4, 2014, 10 million cubic meters of water and 4.5 million cubic meters of "slurry" was released into the Fraser River lake and tributary system when an earthen dam, designed to contain the mining bi-products of selenium, molybdenum and other toxic chemicals, failed. It has been called one of the biggest mining disasters in world history. We oppose the Pebble Mine, not because we are against industry and development, but because we carefully weigh the historical evidence of such proposals and their likelihood of devastating environmental impacts. We strongly urge you to take action to help prevent history from repeating itself! Join Trout Unlimited and the thousands of organizations amassing support for Bristol Bay and the millions of people who rely on the health of her watersheds! www.savebristolbay.org https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Polley_mine_disaster https://www.nrdc.org/experts/taryn-kiekow-heimer/epa-settles-lawsuit-puts-pebble-mine-first-america-last Photo Credit: Reuters
