Save the OzAsia Festival in South Australia!
The Issue
Adelaide’s OzAsia Festival is far more than a festival. It is a celebration of culture, connection, creativity and the extraordinary diversity that makes our community stronger.
Established in 2007 and presented annually by Adelaide Festival Centre and its partners, OzAsia has grown into Australia’s leading contemporary arts festival celebrating the cultures of Asia. Each year, it has welcomed audiences of up to 200,000 people - bringing people together from across South Australia, Australia and beyond.
What makes OzAsia so special?
It is the atmosphere. The energy. The sense of discovery.
It is walking beneath the glow of the lanterns. It is gathering with friends and family at the Lucky Dumpling Market. It is discovering an artist, performance or story you may never have encountered otherwise.
It is the incredible Writers’ Weekend, bringing together authors and ideas from across the region. It is the remarkable film program that opens windows into different cultures, experiences and perspectives. It is the music, theatre, dance, food, art and countless other experiences that transform Adelaide and make the city feel alive.
For so many people, OzAsia has become something to look forward to every year—a place to meet, explore, celebrate and belong. We cannot and should not take that away.
The recent announcement therefore to cancel the OzAsia Festival from 2027 and beyond is therefore a poor decision and one I believe that needs to be reconsidered. Consultation and further discussion is key.
South Australia deserves a rich and diverse calendar of festivals and cultural experiences throughout the year. We should aspire to more than a selection of markets, a few festivals and a small number of activities and some sporting events. These all have a place, but they cannot replace the unique contribution of a major arts and cultural festival like OzAsia with OzAsia being an important part of our cultural fabric and life.
