Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge in northern California recognized the harm caused by European Beachgrass in the early 1980s. Restoration projects have now restored significant portions of the sand dunes to their natural state.

Oregon has yet to recognize European Beachgrass as an invasive species. The result of this misstep includes altered sand dunes and ecosystems at the Oregon Dunes. Other locations along the coast are sites of narrowing beaches as the grass catches sand and creates new dunes where none existed before.

The picture on the left was taken prior to restoration efforts starting in 1980 at Humboldt Bay and clearly shows a dense monoculture of European beachgrass. The picture on the right was taken from the same location after successful restoration efforts, which returned this dune to more natural conditions.
