Community Engagement is the Key to Save the Old Paper Mill

Dear Friends of the Old Mill,

Thank you for supporting the effort to preserve the Old Mill. A group of volunteers are gearing up to campaign to Save the Old Mill.  We will be sending regular updates to you via this platform and we will need your help.  Over the next few months, please get MORE PEOPLE TO SIGN THIS PETITION!

As you might have heard, a request to demolish the Old Mill has been filed in March 2026. The City has a one-year review period during which the City Council can consider alternatives and potentially object to demolition. The City has commissioned an independent engineering report due end of September to understand the cost to stabilize the structure. STAY TUNED!

We have a limited window to develop an economically viable preservation plan for the Old Mill. Rarely in Utah has such an old industrial building been saved by private enterprise.  Hence a group of community volunteers is focused on petitioning large philanthropists and Utah State Government to contribute. Based on the outreach effort so far, what has become clear is that visible community support will be instrumental in convincing public officials and philanthropic donors that the Old Mill is worth saving.

The next few months are especially important, and there are two ways you can help:

1. Help us grow this petition @ https://www.change.org/p/save-the-old-mill

We now have nearly 4,200 signatures and hope to reach 8,000 by the end of December. Please share the petition widely with friends, neighbors, community groups, and social-media networks.  Follow our Facebook Group and forward our poster to your network.

2. Share your preference for the future of the Old Mill.

Send your ideas directly to the Cottonwood Heights Planning Commission at Planning@ch.utah.gov so they become part of the City’s public input process. It is more impactful to include realistic proposals assuming only limited funding is available to subsidize this effort.  But also feel free to share your vision assuming we receive a large sum of donations or government grant.

As more concrete proposals emerge, we will share opportunities to provide feedback through surveys, public comments, and future City meetings. If you would like to volunteer to help with outreach, please contact savetheoldmill1883@gmail.com

Thank you again for being part of this effort.

Warmly,

Save the Old Mill Community Volunteers
