We’ve been vacationing in Nova Scotia, and spent an overnight in Pictou. Upon arriving, we were struck by the town setting and the friendly folks. We were also struck by the stink from Northern Pulp wafting across the harbour on a southwesterly breeze. Then I bought your July 28 Weekend edition and read the letters to the editor. Stacey Rudderham seems to have a succinct take on the NP controversy regarding The Pipe. Although it may be benign in impact, the notion of it has rightly galvanized the growing vocal opposition. As a businessman, I can see the reason to tout the financial impact of 330 jobs. Yet there is an undercurrent of arrogance displayed by NP. Years ago, they could have done something about the smells from the not-tall-enough stacks. But it appears favouring the bottom line over the comfort of the community prevailed. Why would locals look the other way about The Pipe when every breath they take is a reminder of corporate conceit?
