The History of Victoria’s Centennial Square and How It Was Almost Lost - by Mary Fowles

The Mighty Sequoia still stands majestically in front of Victoria's Centennial Square.
The first 2 parts of a 3-part article on this subject, have been written by Mary Fowles, a journalist whose exposés on the discrepencies between the official narrative and the actual record, played a critical role in the preservation of the Centennial Square including its mighty Sequoia and other trees.
The first 2 parts of her well researched article covering the history of Centennial Square can be read here:

Also, of note, myself the petition's creator Sasha Izard am now running for a position on Saanich Council from which I hope to be able to do everything I can to preserve Saanich's urban forest, which is being lost due to Bill 44. You can read more about that on my website SashaIzard.com
You can read up about some of my other petitions there: Petitions - Sasha Izard
The following are two related petitions that I made. One is to protect over 100 oaks in the Braefoot area, which has held a development proposal up for months. The other is against Bill 44. Bill 44 massively upzones lots often the entire lot coverage or near it being taken up by dense development on what were formerly zoned as 'Single Family Home' lots. Any ecology including trees within that space, unless under a specific covenant already in place will be lost to the development. This is devastating our communities, and will destroy the ecology of Southern Vancouver Island unless unchecked.

Petition · Repeal (or amend) BC Bill 44 to Restore Public Hearings and Municipal Powers over Zoning. - Canada · Change.org
Thank you again for all of your support!!! We made a critical difference on the Sequoia, and we can continue to do so to save the ecology of our communities.
