Hi folks! One of my former students, Cynthia Rios, has sent this appeal for help with the "Save the Medallions" campaign to her classmates. But it's great advice for all us who have signed this petition:
To my fellow Lehman College alumni:
The “Save theMedallions” on the Avenue of the Americas campaign needs your support! We need you to sign our petition, invite your neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers to sign it. It's simple; Ask anyone you know to pull out their phones and enter their names on our online petition at:www.change.org/medallions
Sign the Petition
"Save the Medallions on NYC's Avenue of the Americas"
www.change.org
That's what I've been doing in my own neighborhood. But we need more of you to get involved! We have close to 500 signatures, but we need at least 5,000 to then lobby NYC politicians to bring back the colorful coat-of-arms Medallions that represent countries of the Americas.
Only 14 countries still haveMedallionson the Avenue of the Americas and 34 countries are no longer represented, including the homelands of some of our largest Hispanic groups in the city -- the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and many others,
Politicians allowed most of our precious emblems to be taken down; now we need to fight to put them back up!
As you probably know, this campaign grew out of the U.S. Hispanic History course taught by our former Professor Miguel Perez. He has been leading this campaign with a couple of his former students. But we need many more of you to get involved!
Please help us! Sign the petition at www.change.org/medallions
And then start recruiting other signers!
