In 2010, the Maldives became a global leader in marine conservation by establishing a nationwide shark sanctuary. This historic decision protected over a thousand species that depend on healthy reef ecosystems and created a thriving shark-diving tourism industry that contributes over US $50 million annually to the national economy.

Now, the decision to reopen Maldivian waters to shark fishing — starting November 2025 — threatens to undo years of conservation progress. Deep-sea species such as gulper sharks are especially vulnerable to overfishing due to their slow growth and low reproductive rates.

Before the 2010 ban, shark fishing brought in less than US $1 million per year, representing under 1 % of total fisheries income. By contrast, one live shark is estimated to generate US $3,300 per year in tourism revenue — more than a hundred times its value if caught.

We, the undersigned, urge the Government of the Maldives to:

Reverse the decision to reopen shark fishing.
Maintain and strengthen the shark sanctuary to protect biodiversity and reef health.
Promote sustainable livelihoods for Maldivian fishers through ecotourism and marine research.

En 2010, las Maldivas se convirtieron en un líder mundial en conservación marina al establecer un santuario nacional para tiburones. Esta decisión histórica protegió a más de mil especies que dependen de arrecifes saludables y generó una próspera industria de turismo de buceo con tiburones que aporta más de 50 millones de dólares estadounidenses al añoa la economía nacional.

Ahora, la decisión de reabrir las aguas de Maldivas a la pesca de tiburones —a partir de noviembre de 2025— amenaza con revertir años de avances en conservación. Especies de aguas profundas como los tiburones gulper son especialmente vulnerables a la sobrepesca debido a su lento crecimiento y baja tasa reproductiva.

Antes de la prohibición de 2010, la pesca de tiburones generaba menos de 1 millón de dólares al año, representando menos del 1 % de los ingresos pesqueros totales. En cambio, se estima que un tiburón vivo genera 3 300 dólares al añoen ingresos turísticos, más de cien veces su valor si es capturado.

Revertir la decisión de reabrir la pesca de tiburones.
Mantener y reforzar el santuario de tiburones para proteger la biodiversidad y la salud de los arrecifes.
Promover medios de vida sostenibles para las comunidades pesqueras mediante el ecoturismo y la investigación marina.
