Save the Little Theatre Club Mombasa

The Little Theatre Club in Mombasa holds countless cherished memories for many of us. Its stage has been the birthplace of numerous artistic performances, nurturing talents and providing entertainment to the community for years. Sadly, there's a proposal by Kenya Railways to transform this beloved cultural venue into a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centre. This change would eliminate a unique space for the arts, affecting both performers and audiences who rely on it for cultural, educational, and entertainment purposes.

The Little Theatre Club is not just a building; it is a symbol of Mombasa's rich cultural heritage. It has been a hub of creativity where individuals have honed their skills and where audiences have gathered to be inspired, laugh, and experience the arts. The conversion into a TVET centre may serve a practical purpose, but it disregards the irreplaceable value that the theatre embodies for so many.

Statistics show that cultural spaces like the Little Theatre Club contribute significantly to community cohesion and cultural identity. According to studies, involvement in the arts enhances educational outcomes and personal well-being. By preserving the theatre, we sustain a cornerstone of our cultural fabric and continue to provide a vital outlet for creative expression.

We propose that instead of converting the Little Theatre Club into a TVET centre, alternative solutions should be sought to support vocational education without sacrificing an essential cultural institution. Options could include repurposing unused land or buildings that do not have the same historically cultural importance. This way, we protect the arts while still advancing vocational training initiatives.

We call upon Kenya Railways and the relevant authorities to reconsider their plan and to preserve the Little Theatre Club for future generations. Let's keep our cultural institutions alive and thriving so they can continue to enrich our lives and those of our children.

We are signing this petition to show our solid support to saving the Little Theatre Club Mombasa and ensure that its legacy endures for generations to come.

Signed,
