The quiet removal of Lorenna Grant’s Arch is a devastating loss for Perth’s public art landscape. Installed in 2009 as part of the award-winning Northbridge Piazza redevelopment, Arch was one of the city’s most innovative and instantly recognisable public artworks, a landmark that captured  the movement, energy, and architectural rhythm of Northbridge.

Designed by acclaimed Western Australian artist Lorenna Grant, Arch was a pioneering example of contemporary public sculpture, seamlessly integrating with the urban fabric of the city. Its  dynamic, sweeping form not only framed the streetscape but also created a constantly shifting visual experience,  responding to light, weather, and the movement of pedestrians and traffic. A piece that locals embraced, photographers captured, and visitors admired.

Its striking, fluid form framed the cityscape, creating a dynamic interplay between architecture, movement, and urban life.

Over its 14 years in Northbridge, Arch became a favourite among locals, artists, and visitors alike. It was internationally recognised, widely photographed, and featured in major design and art publications. As a key element of the Northbridge Piazza, it enhanced one of the city’s most important public spaces, reinforcing Perth’s reputation as a city that values creativity and innovation.

Yet in 2023, the City of Perth removed Arch for maintenance, with no commitment to reinstatement. Instead of restoring and preserving significant local works, the City is diverting public funds to import, editioned sculptures with no connection to Perth’s artistic or cultural identity. This decision undermines the city’s own Public Art Policy and threatens to erase one of Perth’s most celebrated public artworks.

Perth cannot afford to lose another defining artwork. We demand the immediate reinstatement of Arch, ensuring that Perth’s best public artworks are protected, not discarded.
