Update: I had an extremely beneficial, productive talk with a council member from Cape Charles. Let’s say it’s not as dire as the paper headline led it to be but that’s to be expected. But the Hump is on the radar, I was asked as I’m sure a lot of others were to attend the work session. I felt I really didn’t have a seat at the table, I won’t make that mistake again. We don’t need to show up with torches, pitchforks and petitions, at least yet. When there is no one at a meeting who knows the history, legacy, lore there’s no one there to speak up for the history, legacy and lore. Dropping the ball and not having anyone for this first work session is on me I’ll make sure to make the next one. If you had just moved here the past few years all you would see is a road, an overpass, I understand that. It’s our job to educate those that don’t know, which brings me to my next point. One of the ways for the public, visitors, etc. to be educated is for a Historical Marker to be placed. There’s an application process, I just printed out all 17 pages. These markers are not to honor but to educate the item or area the marker is placed. For years the Hump has not only stood as a way for people to safely get from here to there, but at one time that was the only way in and out of town, children from our segragated past walked over it to get to the beautifuly restored Rosenwald School, the only way to get to the largest truck farm on the East Coast, it’s now called Baycreek, the Harbor. How many WWI, WWII, and Korean Soldiers and Sailers passed under it to get to the ferry for their last stop in the Hampton Roads Area where they would board a ship that would carry them overseas. The lucky ones that returned passing under it one more time on their way home at wars end. The produce, products, etc that passed under as this location helped open up a more north south route for people and goods. We have missed the February 1st deadline, they will be taking a look at applications again on May 1st. Again it’s easy to fly off the handle, but when you sit back and think about it I can see how others may look at it, let’s educate, work together and get something done everyone will be happy with.

🐪 Day posts will continue. #savethehump
